Every expert knows the physical limitations of acoustic leak detection using the correlation method. The dimensions of the pipe play an important role. As the diameter of the pipe increases, the wall thickness of the pipe increases - so it is more difficult to create vibrations in a large pipe. A DN (internal diameter) 400 pipe can practically be compared with a PVC pipe DN 100. Both pipes are difficult to vibrate. In addition, as the diameter of the pipe increases, higher frequencies are no longer transmitted. In addition to the difficulties in detecting leaks in large diameter pipes, non-metallic pipes and pipe networks with low working pressures (< 2 bar) in particular present a major challenge.
